In addition, as the syllabus is in line with the primary school curriculum, studying in kindergarten lays a strong foundation for your child, giving him/her a head start compared to his/her peers in primary school.

Types of Kindergartens in Singapore

Private Kindergartens have separate curriculums, admission and enrolment exercises. These kindergartens usually are smaller in size, providing individual support and quality time to each child. There is generally a wider choice of activities.

MOE Kindergartens aim to provide quality pre-school education that is affordable to Singaporeans. The MOE Kindergartens seek to nurture children holistically, so that they can graduate as confident individuals with good social skills and a strong foundation in literacy and numbers.

International kindergartens are independent and conduct their own admission/enrolment exercises. They often have generally strong values leading to a different method of teaching with specialised teachers. Finally, they usually have a primary school as well, which facilitate the transition from preschool to school.

Types of teaching methods in Singapore

In Singapore, the children are given the edge over the rest right from the start. According to the Ministry of Education, one of the key outcomes of preschool education is to nurture the holistic development of children and to achieve that, the ministry recognises six different pre-school curriculum approaches that are used by different preschools.

Montessori practises spontaneous learning whereby the teacher is the facilitator and young children work to complete new tasks independently.

Play-Based works under the principle that children learn the most when interacting with materials in a fun and interesting manner.

Reggio Emilia believes that children should learn through hands-on experience using all their senses, and promotes project-based learning.

The High Scope Method has a strong emphasis on learning through interaction with the environment. There is also emphasis on daily routine, such as following a time-table, which is believed to be vital to a child’s growth.

Waldorf Steiner curriculum has a strong focus on getting children involved in practical activities. It frowns upon exposure to large amounts of television and media as it is believed to limit a child’s development.

The Theory of Multiple Intelligences views intelligence as multi-dimensional as opposed to purely academic intelligence. It focuses on developing other areas of intelligences such as Linguistic, Logical, Body Kinaesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal and Naturalistic concurrently.

How long does it take to

enrol in a Kindergarten in Singapore?

Moreover, you should also consider the duration of the Student Pass application. You will need to apply for a Student’s Pass if you have a child of foreign nationality and wish to enrol in a kindergarten unless your child has a Dependant’s Pass or Immigration Exemption Order. You will need to apply 2-3 months before the intake. You do not need to be in Singapore while your application is being processed. As such, we recommend you apply for a Student’s Pass before arriving in Singapore as you cannot extend your stay while the processing is underway. If your application is approved, you can then enter Singapore to complete the formalities required to issue your Student’s Pass.

The procedures to get your child admitted in a kindergarten in Singapore don’t take really long.

However, it is highly recommended to start the applications early.

Generally processing time for an application is two weeks. However, some applications may take longer to process.

At Ei Study, we are happy to help with the admission and the visa application process.
